MacVoices
The talk of the Apple community

Andrew Gould, the Co-Creator and CEO of Squirrels explains how their apps, AirParrot, Reflector, and Ditto, allow you to share your screen and content from your Mac, iPad, or Windows PC to other devices like Apple TV, Chromecast, Google Chromecast, or many other devices. In the first part of our conversation, Andrew explains why COVID-19 caused them to push up the release of their latest version, the extra features that AirParrot offers beyond normal Apple TV screen sharing, and how they solve problems in the enterprise and education markets.
The second half of our discussion with cognitive scientist Brittany Smith gets a bit more specific on the issue of interfaces with an example of an iPhone home screen that is distracting at best, how Apple tries to help you not create that distraction, why some people jailbreak phone for interface modifications (please don’t do that), and why the options in iOS 14 help address some of that distraction. She also shares some of her preferences and why when it comes to her Mac’s Finder arrangement.

In our most recent MacVoices Live, Brittany Smith gives us a look at the macOS, iOS, and iPadOS interfaces from the perspective of a cognitive neuroscientist. The first part of our conversation delves into what our choices about preferred interface elements and how we organize our workspaces says about us, using host Chuck Joiner as an example. (1)

In the second part of our discussion with Rachel and Mike Schmitz of The Intentional Family podcast, our guests dig deeper into the idea of “creators not consumers” as a central theme of their efforts, address the issues of living in today’s world, with today’s devices and challenges as opposed to the ones that they grew up with, and why the podcast started with the idea of a book, and how it might still turn into that. The first part of our conversation with Rachel and Mike Schmitz of The Intentional Family podcast starts with why this new show, what gives them the credibility to talk about it, and their desire to share what has worked for their family. From tech-oriented issues such as screen time and non-tech issues such as family chores, Mike and Rachel discuss some of the methods they have used, how they have modified them as they went along, and why everyone in the family gets a vote…to a point. Teaching how to use our devices and time to create rather than consume, balancing that out with the benefits of video games, and how they have modified their own behaviors to "practice what they preach” make for an informative conversation. Mike's love-affair for all things Apple began in his Junior High's Library playing Lemonade Stand on a pair of brand new Apple ][+ computers. His penchant for Apple gear continued to be nurtured by the public school system when, in High School, he was hired as a lab supervisor to help run the Apple ][e lab for his fellow students and their Print Shop needs. Then, further still, in college he often opted to help a friend with her Computer Graphics coursework instead of focusing on his own studies, but only because it helped get him closer to the Mac-lab.

The Apple App Store just had its 12th anniversary week. How time flies! The panel of Mark Fuccio, David Ginsburg, Kelly Guimont, Warren Sklar, and host Chuck Joiner talk about the development of The App Store, its importance to the Apple ecosystem, and how it drove the utility of the iPhone and iPad. The fees Apple charges developers, for both being a developer as well as distributing the apps, sparks an enthusiastic discussion of transparency and services. (Part 1)

Our conversation with Kyle Foster, Marketing Specialist for Synology, wraps up with a discussion of what you can do with their devices besides just using them for storage. One of the strengths of Synology are the built in applications, both first- and third-party applications. Everything from a Plex media server to your own private cloud to a base for your home surveillance cameras is supported, and Kyle uses the latter as an example of why Synology might be for you. We also talk about how they leverage your knowledge of their hardware and software across their product line, and touch on the ever-present topic of security.

Kyle Foster, Marketing Specialist for Synology, introduces their new, upgraded NAS models that are for both home and business, and helps us understand how Synology names their products so that you know exactly what each can do. Expandable by RAM upgrades, multiple bay expansion units, or SSD caches, Synology offers lots of options, from private clouds to media servers, to backup servers. Kyle talks about the benefits of some of these, what RAID is, and why you don’t need to be a network guru to reap its benefits.

Jeff Gamet, David Ginsburg, Frank Petrie, and host Chuck Joiner continue their MacVoices Live discussion of how to safely run the Big Sur developer (or public) beta by making an external SSD recommendation, and dig in to the violation of Apple’s NDA by developers publishing benchmarks of the developer Mac mini units. Some of the other topics covered include the upsides and downsides of rumors and how they are handled by the media, Apple’s new openness, and how iPad Pro uses are and will affect future Mac design.
Mike Potter of ESC! Technologies wraps up our discussion of WordPress with a discussion of Plugins and how they bring functionality to your web site, and offers more thoughts on whether you need a developer or whether you want do run your website yourself. He covers why some businesses think that a Facebook page is enough (it isn’t), why you need to plan and budget for your web site like your business depends on it (because it just might), and talks about the benefits of a working with a local developer. Finally, Mike teases us with some details of a virtual Macstock this year.

Michael Potter offers computer consulting of all flavors through his company, ESC! Technologies Group, including building WordPress web sites. Fine him on Twitter as @esctechgroup. He is also the Executive Producer of For Mac Eyes Only, and the organizer of the annual Macstock Conference and Expo.
