MacVoices
The talk of the Apple community

Terri Morgan and Chris Demiris of Luma Fusion are back to update us on what is coming to iOS video editor extraordinaire, LumaTouch. In the short term, we will be seeing features like inverted cropping and HDR, and a little farther out, advanced key framing, subtitles support, and multicam will be added to the mix. They explain how LumaTouch supports HDR and makes working with it easy, how the new audio engine will bring back some AU plug-in support, and what you need to know about working with external storage and LumaTouch.
In Part 2 of our discussion of Take Control of Podcasting with author Andy Affleck, we get more in-depth with the pros and cons of recording and editing your podcast on an iPad or iPhone. The trade-offs of portability vs. connectivity, where the Mac is superior, and how to bridge the two are discussed. Andy also talks about who the audience is for this book, why the timing of the release is so important, and some of the non-technical aspects of pacing yourself and your podcast.

You might have that same need as you work from home if your employer mandates something other than what you use. Khoi reviews how it works, why it does not present any security risks, and why you may forget that you are using it.

Are you surprised that you are being tracked? Should you be surprised? See what the panel has to say, and how you can prevent it.

Some of the topics include Apple Watch, iPhone, whether 5G will really make a difference, and the reality, or lack thereof, of the “supercycle”.

The second part of our conversation with Joe Kissell about Take Control of Big Sur focuses on how to get the most out of the new version of macOS, from the more iOS-influenced look to the features that you won’t be able to access until you buy an Apple Silicon-based machine. Joe discusses some of the updated productivity features, why you don’t have to upgrade to Big Sur to enjoy the latest privacy protections in Safari, and why he is excited by the return of the startup chime.

Joe Kissell helps you get up and running with Apple’s latest version of macOS in Take Control of Big Sur. In the first part of our conversation, Joe explains how this book combines what could have been two books, and covers getting ready for the upgrade, and the upgrade itself. Joe takes us through some things that you should be aware of before, during, and after the upgrade, including a potential limitation on being able to boot from a backup, and a caveat regarding Time Machine.

Our MacVoices Live! conversation with featured guest Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus and panel members Dave Ginsburg, Brittany Smith, Frank Petrie, and Warren Sklar continues with more about Bob’s new book, GarageBand For Dummies, Second Edition. That part of the discussion includes comparisons of GarageBand and Logic Pro, who each is for, and learning curves. Then, the panel just couldn’t stay away from the Apple/Epic Games battle, but this time we approached it through the copycat version of Apple’s “1984” commercial and director Ridley Scott’s comments about it.
In spite of a technical difficulty, MacVoices Live! went on with featured guest Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus and panel members Dave Ginsburg, Brittany Smith, Frank Petrie, and Warren Sklar. In Part 1, Bob talked about his newest effort, GarageBand For Dummies, Second Edition. He explains why it was time for a revision, the track he recorded and used for his examples, and how you can use that very same track to help you learn. Roundtripping between the Mac and iOS versions, piano roll and notation editing, why you need a MIDI keyboard vs. your computer’s keyboard if you are at all serious about GarageBand are all part of the conversation. (Part 1 of 2)

We start the second part of our conversation with Josh Centers, the author of Take Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, with a review of some of the privacy and security features Apple has built in to iOS 14. Some of those include video and camera use indicators, limited photo roll access by default, and why the new clipboard access notifications correct a potential weak spot in security. Other new features include sleep tracking, improvements to Notes, Voice Memo organization, a translation app, and a lot more. Then we switch over to iPadOS 14 and talk about which of the iOS 14 features are and are not included, why Scribble may be a productivity game changer, and get Josh’s advice on whether these updates should be installed on Day One, or whether you may want to wait a little while.

Josh Centers has completely re-written his guide to Apple’s mobile operating systems in Take Control of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. Josh explains how the App Library in iOS 14 works, why it might look like your apps are in two places at once (but aren’t), and how management of those apps is just a little different. Widgets will give you always-on access to the information you want, and provide a new way to display that information. Josh gives us some examples, including a radical idea for a Home or second screen that is now possible. (Part 1)

The second part of our MacVoices Live! conversation with featured guest Michael E. Cohen and the panel of Mark Fuccio, David Ginsburg, Frank Petrie, and host Chuck Joiner wrapped up our discussion of the on-going App Store saga with some interesting parallels to other industries. Then, we turn to the history of eBooks, and Michael’s history with their predecessors such as HyperCard and CD-ROMs, how hardware changes have affected ebooks, and what some of the unappreciated details it takes to make them look “right”.
