In the first part of our discussion, Jeff covers the evolution of a Take Control Crash Course into a full-fledged 1.0 version of this book, and why that happened by popular demand, then starts to dig in to some of his favorite features, and why everyone should have one (if they don’t already).</p> <p>This edition of MacVoices is sponsored by<strong> <a title="Smile" href="http://www.smilesoftware.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smile</a></strong>, the makers of <a href="http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html"><strong>PDFpen</strong> </a>and <a href="http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpenPro/index.html"><strong>PDFpenPro</strong></a>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-for-ipad/id490774625?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen for iPad</a></strong>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-for-iphone/id557705455?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen for iPhone</a></strong>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-scan+-ocr-pdf-text/id685513192?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen Scan+</a></strong>, as well as <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textexpander-for-mac/id405274824?mt=12&at=11ldw7"><strong>TextExpander for Mac</strong></a> and<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textexpander/id326180690?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">TextExpander for iPhone and iPad</a></strong>, as well as the new <a href="https://smilesoftware.com/textexpander"><strong>TextExpander for Windows</strong></a>. <p><strong>Michael E. Cohen</strong> digs deeper into some of the concepts in his new Take Control book, <strong><a href="https://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mysteries/">Apple Interface Mysteries</a> </strong>in the second half of our conversation. Again, he draws on past experience to explain how some of the interface elements we all know came about, and why they aren’t always as intuitive as we would like. Be sure to watch past the end credits for some bonus material that might just give you a new perspective on interfaces and how to learn them.</p> <p>This edition of MacVoices is sponsored by<strong> <a title="Smile" href="http://www.smilesoftware.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smile</a></strong>, the makers of <a href="http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html"><strong>PDFpen</strong> </a>and <a href="http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpenPro/index.html"><strong>PDFpenPro</strong></a>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-for-ipad/id490774625?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen for iPad</a></strong>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-for-iphone/id557705455?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen for iPhone</a></strong>,<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdfpen-scan+-ocr-pdf-text/id685513192?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">PDFpen Scan+</a></strong>, as well as <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textexpander-for-mac/id405274824?mt=12&at=11ldw7"><strong>TextExpander for Mac</strong></a> and<strong> <a target="itunes_store" href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textexpander/id326180690?mt=8&uo=4&at=11ldw7">TextExpander for iPhone and iPad</a></strong>, as well as the new <a href="https://smilesoftware.com/textexpander"><strong>TextExpander for Windows</strong></a>. <p>The latest offering from <strong>Take Control Books</strong> is a bit unusual for them. <strong>Michael E. Cohen</strong> explains why he has wanted to write <strong><a href="https://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mysteries/">Apple Interface Mysteries</a> </strong>for a long time, and why now was the right time. Rather than digging into perform different functions in macOS and iOS, Michael explores the “why” behind the way they work, and how they evolved into what we know as the modern version of this operating systems. Part history, part technical explanation, this is a fun discussion and book for any Apple enthusiast.</p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://linkedin.com/macvoices"><img height="47" alt="LinkedIn" class="aligncenter wp-image-10346 " src="http://www.macvoices.com/wp-content/uploads/LinkedIn-logo-big-300x74.png" width="191"/></a></p> <p>This edition of MacVoices is supported by <strong>LinkedIn Jobs</strong>. Mike's love-affair for all things Apple began in his Junior High's Library playing Lemonade Stand on a pair of brand new Apple ][+ computers. His penchant for Apple gear continued to be nurtured by the public school system when, in High School, he was hired as a lab supervisor to help run the Apple ][e lab for his fellow students and their Print Shop needs. Then, further still, in college he often opted to help a friend with her Computer Graphics coursework instead of focusing on his own studies, but only because it helped get him closer to the Mac-lab.</p>

<p><strong>Jeff Carlson</strong> is back to discuss photo editing from a different perspective. In his <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B086LD8VZL/?tag=macvoices-20">The Photographer's Guide to Luminar 4</a></strong>, we get a look at a new way to enhance our photos. While Luminar has all the usual capabilities, Jeff explains how it uses slider controls to simplify what, in other programs, might take multiple difficult and time-consuming steps. In Luminar 4, AI isn’t just a buzzword, but is integrated to improve your experience and results. In Part 1, Jeff uses the portrait and sky improvements as examples of what you can accomplish.</p> <p><a href="https://linode.com/macvoices/?utm_source=macvoices&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=20%20dollar&utm_campaign=macvoices20"><img height="86" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" border="0" src="http://www.mugcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Linode-logo.png" alt="Linode" width="220" title="Linode logo.png" class="alignnone"/></a> This edition of MacVoices is supported by <strong><a href="https://linode.com/macvoices/?utm_source=macvoices&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=20%20dollar&utm_campaign=macvoices20">Linode</a>, </strong>high performance cloud hosting and virtual servers for everyone.
